Food-safe waxes are applied to apples in the packing
houses before they go to market—replacing the
natural wax that apples produce, which is washed off
in the packing houses. Wax is needed on the apples to
protect them from dehydration and decay.
The U.S. government regulates wax coatings to ensure
safety. Extensive research by governmental and scientific
authorities has shown that approved waxes are safe to
eat. If you do not wish to consume the wax coatings,
you may a) purchase unwaxed produce (which will be labeled
as such) or b) remove the outer skin.
